Heroes and Villains - Hernan Cortes Part 1 If you're a lover of 16th-century history, best steer clear of this. A drama documentary is always going to flounder trying to re-create the clash-of-civilisations story of Hernan Cortes's conquest of Mexico - it's on too horrific a scale. (Maybe Hollywood should try.) But at least Brian McCardie's gutsy performance in the Heroes and Villains strand gives us a flavour of what might have driven Cortes - a mixture of piety, dread and sheer, mad-eyed folly. Watching McCardie, hedged with re-enactments and computer effects, you can just about swallow that a deranged adventurer and a handful of men, with no authority from the King of Spain and supplies pinched from the Governor of Cuba, could bring down the Aztec empire, which included a city (Tenochtitlan) bigger than anything in Europe.
The map shows the battle formation of the East & West Camps in the Sekigahara battle, which is the finals of the age of samurai wars. Ishida Mitsunari, the leader of the West, stood on that hill called Sasao-yama and planed his strategy in the year of 1600. The winner, Tokugawa Ieyasu who commanded the East, was appointed the Shogun by the then Emperor after the battle.
This is the opening bit for the BBC episode "Shogun" (aka "Ieyasu") in the Warriors series. I was the historical researcher for this episode. I thought it was worth putting up the intro as a sort of "trailer" to the episode

This documentary of Tokugawa Ieyasu was made using real pictures of the actual Samurai involved, and their Crests, set to The Lonely Shepard. There was one factual error in the movie, that of course beeing that Oda Nobunaga was not from peasant stock as implied, but that subtitle had been meant Hideyoshi, Toyotomi. Enjoy.

The Battle of Marathon 490 BC took place during the 1st Persian Invasion of Greece. 10000 Athenians & 1000 Plataeans without cavalry & archer support under the command of Miltiades fought against a Persian invading force of 10000 to 100000 infantry & 1000 cavalry. Althaugh the Spartans were suppose to join the battle, they didn't arrive in time, but still the battle was won by the Greeks. The Greek Hoplites althaugh vastly outnumbered, fought bravely & managed to double envelop & rout the Persians & chased them down to there ships killing most of them & captured 7 of their ships. Althaugh the Persians were much more than the Greeks & had cavalry & archers, they were no match against the bronze-armoured, disciplined Hoplites, the Persians suffered 6400 dead & many more wounded while the Greeks lost just 203 according to Herodotus.
A 10 minute clip of the battle scene from Ran by Kurosawa. Re-issued DVD avail: www.amazon.com
This short film clip is part of the stunning initial castle attack in Akira Kurosawa's Ran (translated as meaning Chaos). It is one of the Japanese director's greatest films, and is his samurai version of Shakespeare's King Lear. The clip demonstrates Kurosawa's impressive use of action choreography, imagery, backdrop and color in telling his story. And, likely the one of the hardest, most courageous stunt any performer had to endure: that of being knocked down by horse and rider, only to have to lie still while the cavalry rode over and around one's prone body.
King Richard I of England & 2000 men went to rescue the besieged Garrison at Jaffa by 12000 saracens led by Saladin. Richard's bravery in battle, earned him the name Richard the Lionheart.
