Shinsengumi saigo no samurai
Okita Soji does "dojo yaburi"(道場破り/どうじょう やぶり)in this scean ― making a challenge at a kendo hall (and bringing its members to their knees.),then he wins and gets the hall's symbol ― doorplate made of wood and written in brush with India ink stick[sumi/墨/すみ]. But they do not satisfied and pursue after Okita. Okita meets again in a manner of fair tactic ― Mine-uchi(back the sword in order not to kill anybody )[峰打ち/刀背打ち/みねうち]. Cop group Shinsengumi sometimes appears in ova Samurai X trust & betrayal and Rurouni Kenshin kyoto arc , which is historical fact. Shin[new]sen[selected]gumi[group](1863-?) Souji Okita(1842-1868) was a genius for swordplay, born in Azabu Tokyo. Only 12 years old he won the adult match, and in his 18 years ,he had already gotten a "Menkyo-kaiden" of Ten-nen-rishin-style. (given not only teacher's license of Kendo as a master but also a source ― so called Ougi(core) ― from his head master / eg Kenshin was given Ougi Amakakeru-ryu-no-hirameki from Mr.Hiko in his 28 years ...could not compare ,though.) Boss. Isami Kondo(1834-1868) and Second Boss. Toshizo Hijikata(1835-1869) were also real people , born in Tama Tokyo. Kondo-san, Toshi and Soji were neighbors with same martial arts style in same dojo(ashram). So they made a Cop-group themselves - it was Shin-sen-gumi. Nice teamwork. Isami Kondo Toshizo Hizikata Soji Okita:Riho Makise Also ponytail, kimono, skirt, sandals with socks, and having two katanas looks like Battousai ...

NHK Taiga Drama "Shinsengumi" 2004 main theme performed by John Ken Nuzzo
BYAKKOTAI.NET When people say "Byakkotai" they are usually referring to the small group of teenagers who took their own lives on Mt. Iimori in AIZU. However, not all Byakkotai committed suicide or died. Around this very time of March or April in 1868 (the Boshin War), a fighting force comprising of hundreds of very young samurai of Aizu was already formed in preparation of the invasion by the kangun or Imperial Troops. The 16-17 year old young men were intended to be a "reserve force" (Shiba 45). However, it seems to have been the case that 15 year olds did enter the force through deception. The story of the Byakkotai has been narrated in many ways such as pop-culture, movies, novels, even crossover manga with the Shinsengumi. The lack of a detailed historical narrative of the Byakkotai points to there symbolic significance. They became more than just boys who misread a situation and made extreme decisions. The End of Aizu's Future The value of male children in Japanese (Pan-asian) culture is well known. Children really were raised by the community. Extended family members, close friends, and the many teachers at the domain school (Nisshinkan) were all authority figures who were allowed to shape and discipline these young men. The Byakkotai were part of the very last generation to complete or experience a traditional samurai education. They were not just sons of certain families but sons of the entire domain. Their deaths stood for the end of the domain's future as a ...

Aa Shinsengumi by Mahashi Michiya. Mihashi was a Japanese enka singer during the post-war era, famous for his "elastic" voice. The song itself has a very sad but somehow "glorious" tune, reflecting the tragic fate of the group.
A cute scene from the NHK drama "Shinsengumi!" Kondo and Hijikata celebrate finally becoming direct vasals of the Shogun.
For many people warrior women seem to exist only in the world of exaggerated fiction, myth or summer movies. However, in many ancient cultures, they were real historic figures. The Last Samurai Woman is a very brief introduction to a real human being who was an accomplished warrior and leader. Abandon all thoughts of women suddenly taking up arms to face a dire situation. Nakano Takeko and her female comrades (they are later known as the Joshigun/Joushitai) of Aizu had studied martial arts SERIOUSLY PRIOR to the time their homeland was invaded in 1868 by Imperial troops during the Boshin War. "Aizu's women warriors...received in-depth combat driling, particularly in the use of the halberd. Educated to be equally skilled in the 'ways of the pen and sword', they were also indoctrinated with the belief that their duty was first to protect their domain and lord, and then their families" (Wright 402) Furthermore, this extraordinary group of women saw themselves as retainers to Teruhime (Princess Matsudaira Teru of Aizu) who was the adoptive sister of the domain's daimyo (lord) Matsudaira Katamori. You may learn more about her here: en.wikipedia.org These women were raised under strict patriarchal Confucian ideals therefore it would be a mistake to view them as feminists (although I'm sure they would appreciate some accomplishments made by modern feminists), when their first priority was to defend their home. I would like to add that some of the warrior women who did survive ...

Saito = the win. Couldn't resist making another fangirl movie, but this one is a tribute to my personal favorite, Saito Hajime. Especially after numerous comments for him. (Sano, Aoshi, and Kenshin make brief cameo's ladies, don't worry). Set to George Michael's "Too Funky" . . . and yeah that might not be the song you picture for Saito but hey, I find he moves a little more fluid and slinky than you realize. Lot of people set him to hard rock, but he's got a 'funky' rhythm to him. As the song says . . . 'would you like me to seduce you?'
