新選組! 最終回 愛しき友よ
鳥羽・伏見の戦い
A clip from Shinsengumi's 33rd episode featuring Yamanami Keisuke (played by Masato Sakai). Yamanami is ordered to commit seppuku by virtue of the Shinsengumi's code (he supposedly broke the code which states that members are not allowed to leave the group). However, everyone in the Shinsengumi knows that he was innocent (in fact, he deliberately left because, according to his conversation with Kondo Isami before his death, he was simply "tired" and had no place in the Shinsengumi anymore). This happened at the same time when their code was at its strictest implementation, especially by Hijikata Toshizo. Although it appears as if Hijikata and Yamanami cannot get along, in one of the scenes (not included here), Saitou tells Okita that both men have mutual respect for each other when he saw them working together. The Shinsengumi raid in the amazing Kenshin OVA, is one of my favorite anime sequences. It was probably inspiried by this part of the 1971 japanese movie called "Shinsengumi: Assassins of Honor" It actualy matches more than you just see in this video, becuase in the anime the Shinsengumi are looking to raid on an important Shogunate gathering (based on real like historic events), but catch the wrong gathering (while the real historic gatheting took place in a different location), in the movie it is the same, and is shown in an identicle manner. Watch how in the anime the candle is being cut down to bring about darkness, to allow an advantage for the defending group who are out numbering the Shinsengumi. In the movie it is the exact same. The fight is just longer. And you see Okita spitting blood due to his illness (in the anime it is shown towards the end, in the very last epic fight sequence between Kenshin and Saitou). It is not the best Shinsengumi movie I've ever seen, there are SO MANY movies in Japan about Shinsengumi. But the raid in this one is just so much like the Kenshin anime :-) If you want to see a nice new movie with Shinsengumi, watch the 2004 amazing movie "When The Last Sword is Drawn"

Yamazaki Susumu joins the Shinsengumi in Kyoto. He gives them the info that the Choshuu will be at the Ikedaya. Kondou waits for Aizu reinforcements, but not receiving help leads the raid at the Ikedaya along with Okita followed later by Hijikata and his men.
